Dear DAP,
Did you not realize that this RM1 billion 1BestariNet project cost includes pulling broadband lines to 10,000 schools throughout Malaysia -rural and urban?
Broadband access that schools never had access to in the past.
This was the main purpose of this project. And it is not accurate that 1BestariNet has 3% usage. It is the VLE application that has 3% usage. The broadband is used by all the schools.
So typical of DAP to spin like crazy and not applaud that all 10,000 schools in Malaysia now have fast broadband access and focus on the 3% usage of the secondary VLE application that depends on the teachers and students to want to use and create content for.
This project is a public-private partnership. It would have cost govt a lot more to pull and provide fast broadband internet access to all schools in Malaysia. YTL is putting in some investments as part of their aim to provide nationwide coverage for their YES 4G network and hence using this project to make schools as landing points where they can then provide YES coverage to the surrounding areas in the hope of capturing more customers.
The VLE system was not the main focus of this project but an additional value-add that the vendors YTL provided. At least the VLE platform is there now (where it once never existed) and the next target is to increase its usage.
This spin by DAP is so typical of their efforts to mislead people and incite hatred by focusing on specific portions and missing the big picture and in this case, the main objective of providing fast broadband to all schools where none existed before.
Malaysians are just too easily misled by politicians whose main objective is to incite hatred.
What would be the cost of providing broadband access to 10,000 schools for 15 years and also provide 200MB a year quota for 10 million students, parents and teachers for 15 years?
This is the main question.
YTL says it costs RM3 billion in total for 15 years.
