Sarawak DAP today announced a boycott of all activities with allies PAS and PKR until the two parties clarify their stands on the implementation of hudud.
Its chairman Chong Chieng Jen, however, said the state DAP would remain in Pakatan Rakyat (PR), but would leave the coalition if PAS's ulama faction comes to power after party elections in June next year.
"If the liberal progressive (faction) controls (the PAS central committee), there is no reason for us to go out," he said, as quoted by Bernama.
PAS's Ulama wing leaders have been promoting the implementation of hudud, or the Islamic capital punishments for serious crimes.
Chong also took PKR to task for its vague stand over hudud law.
"The decision to quit (PR) is a point of no return. Before we go to that point of no return, we have to keep our options open but, at the same time, make our stand very clear," Bernama quoted him as saying.
On September 26, the state DAP Youth said it was ending cooperation with PAS over a statement by PAS Youth vice-chief Mohd Khairil Nizam Khiruddin that the Islamist party would consider leaving PR when the time was right.
Sarawak DAP Youth chief Wong King Wei, who is also party vice-chairman at the national level, said there was "no more space for further cooperation with PAS".
